     Moving to West Seventh

The West Seventh neighborhood is officially known as the Fort Road area due to its location on historic Native American and fur trader paths along the Mississippi River from downtown Saint Paul to Fort Snelling. The West Seventh neighborhood is a traditional immigrant neighborhood located at the base of Summit Hill and along the western bluffs of the Mississippi River, spanning the entire length of West Seventh St. (Old Fort Rd.)

The West Seventh neighborhood is an eclectic mix of historic homes and modern riverfront condominiums; long-time neighborhood establishments and new neighborhood gathering spots; booming entertainment in Seven Corners, above, near downtown and quiet residential areas throughout. The neighborhood has miles of trails flanking the Mississippi that connect to downtown, excellent schools, a burgeoning arts scene, and one-of-a-kind shopping, dining, and entertainment venues along the West Seventh/Fort Road corridor. West Seventh is also home to some of Saint Paul’s most historic homes in the Irvine Park neighborhood (one of Saint Paul’s designated historic districts). The neighborhood has great access to downtown Saint Paul, MSP airport, and the surrounding suburbs—and is served by high frequency transit along West Seventh Street.

The neighborhood contains a tremendous concentration of larger brick and wood frame houses (as well as rowhouses and double houses) dating from the 1870’s through the turn of the century in Italianate, Queen Anne, Eastlake, and Colonial Revival and other styles. There are also Prairie Style homes, modest Four squares, and modern, newly constructed condos and apartments along the riverfront, close to downtown.
